Chelsea hand Spurs Champions League headache

Chelsea, for the second time this league season, beat London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

The Blues hosted the league clash on Thursday night with Spurs looking to edge closer to the fourth spot in the league, hoping to secure Uefa Champions League football for next season.

Chelsea, however, had other ideas.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side dominated the first half, keeping possession of the ball and creating several chances before finally being rewarded.

A free-kick sent to the back post by Conor Gallagher saw defender Trevor Chalobah leap highest to put the ball in the back of the net.

Chelsea perhaps should have had a two-goal lead when striker Nicholas Jackson was through on goal but failed to score.

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglu was uncharacteristically angry on the sidelines during the first half, suggesting an emotional team talk at the break.

Chelsea would have expected a reaction from their rivals and a reaction they got as Spurs came out flying in the second half.

Spurs put Chelsea on the back foot and should have perhaps scored one or two of their own, given their dominance.

However, not taking their chances would come back to haunt them as Chelsea scored a second.

A Cole Palmer freekick smashed the crossbar before Jackson was able to head the ball into an empty net.

The upcoming fixtures do not get any easier for Spurs as they still have to face Liverpool and Manchester City before the season ends.

Chelsea next face West Ham United at the weekend.
