In a recent interview with Nomalanga Shozi on BET’s “Behind the Story,” the outspoken presenter Dineo Ranaka opened up about her tumultuous experiences working at various radio stations in South Africa. And boy, did she have a lot to say!
Ranaka didn’t hold back as she revealed, in her own unique way, that radio stations had a negative impact on her well-being. “5FM? I fell sick. YFM? I fell sick. Metro FM? I went to initiation school. Kaya FM? I got depression,” she exclaimed. According to her, the radio industry is “a very abusive industry on the back end.”

After being sacked from Kaya FM, where she co-hosted with Sol Phenduka, Ranaka took matters into her own hands and started her own podcast. She had previously revealed that Kaya FM was a toxic working environment, stating, “radio makes me physically sick.”
It turns out that radio was never her first love; television production was. However, she found herself doing radio because she was good at it and needed to pay the bills.
Ranaka’s candid confessions shed light on the often unseen challenges faced by those in the radio industry. It’s a reminder that behind the glamorous facade of being a radio personality, there can be a darker side.
But fear not, Dineo Ranaka is a resilient force to be reckoned with. She’s taken control of her career and is forging her own path in the media world. We can’t wait to see what she does next!
