The story
Orlando Pirates legend Oupa Manyisa recently sat down with Josta Dladla on the "Izinja zeGame" podcast, to speak about how he was signed by the Sea Robbers back in 2008.
"Ace" enjoyed a successful career in South African football, winning five league titles, a double treble with Pirates, and was an AFCON quarter-finalist with Bafana Bafana, where he earned 27 caps.
Manyisa, who was served the Buccaneers for almost a decade before making the switch to Mamelodi Sundowns in 2017, recently recounted the story of how he was recruited by the Soweto giants.
"After matric, in 2008, Screamer (Stanley Tshabalala) took me to Pirates and I signed. No trials, nothing," stated Manyisa, who then told the hilarious tale of how coach Owen Da Gama shooed him away from training on his first day.
"First day, first training session, coach Owen Da Gama says; 'My guy, I don't know who signed you, you can't train," said Manyisa, revealing that he left training but was called back to training the next day after it was confirmed to Da Gama that Manyisa is a Pirates player.
Manyisa also cited that Owen Da Gama takes credit for bringing him to the Buccaneers, with Ace mentioning that he was scouted and signed by Orlando Pirates' technical director, Stanley Tshabalala.
