Meet Doctor RassieĀ

By Lucky Vince Pienaar

Doctor Johan Erasmus, the guy we know as Rassie, the World Cup-winning coach, has received an honorary doctorate from North-West University in Potchefstroom.

While many have laughed at the idea of awarding a doctorate to a man who devotes himself exclusively to sport, the honour is not far-fetched.

Erasmus is being recognised, according to the university, for ā€œinnovative and exceptional management of the Boks during their victorious 2019 and 2023 World Cup campaigns and his significant standing in the international rugby coaching arenaā€.

The university said Erasmus has also shown an unwavering commitment to the Sport Transformation Charter which is included in the Strategic Plan of the Department of Sport and Recreation. They said it has resulted in a systematic change in the development of talent and skills across the national rugby spectrum.

ā€œHe has meaningfully used his sphere of influence to advocate for social change, fostering an environment in which diversity and inclusivity are celebrated, and differences are seen as strengths rather than weaknesses,ā€ said the university.

South African Rugby Union president Mark Alexander attended the ceremony as well as Springbok captain Siya Kolisi, who flew out from France for the occasion.

ā€œIā€™m extremely honoured but I have to give the credit to the Springbok team and management for their resilience and determination who made this possible,ā€ Rassie said.
