Kaizer Chiefs’ performance no laughing matter

Extra Time: Michael Madyira writes that the situation at Kaizer Chiefs is no longer funny, even for rival fans

Kaizer Chiefs’ dire standing worsened on Sunday when they lost 1-0 to relegation-threatened Richards Bay in a PSL match.

This result left them 10th on the table, an unfamiliar position for a club expected to challenge for the PSL title.

Even Chiefs fans who enjoy social media banter appear to have gone into hiding.

Amakhosi supporters take the jibes directed at their team in their stride and usually respond light-heartedly to the taunts.

But the situation has gotten out of hand now, and it is tense on social media whenever Chiefs lose.

With six league games to go before the end of the season, the Soweto giants could be mentioned in the relegation matrix.

They have 10 points more than Richards Bay who are at the relegation cut-off point.

Chiefs’ remaining six matches include facing SuperSport United, Mamelodi Sundowns and tricky AmaZulu.

These are games that could potentially spin them further off a respectable position.

It’s already a doomed season for them, but the not-so-glamorous Glamour Boys need to look to their future now.

Work to patch things up should have already started but those calling the shots at Naturena continue to show that they are indecisive.

They should already have named a coach for next season, but Chiefs continue to sink under caretaker trainer Cavin Johnson.

The new man to take charge should be hard at work, using their remaining games to closely identify their needs for next term.

The new coach should already have drawn a list of transfer targets and established a budget to sign new players.

But those running the show at the club continue repeating the very same mistakes that saw Chiefs ending up settling for Molefi Ntseki before the start of the current season after dragging their feet in appointing a new coach.
