ANC charges Jacob Zuma for leading MKĀ

The ANC has finally charged former president Jacob Zuma for his Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party activities and association.

The ruling party served Zuma with his charges on Thursday. They were concerned about his announcement on 16 December 2023 in Soweto that he was going to back the then-newly formed MK party.

Zuma has since fully taken over control of MK after expelling Jabulani Khumalo, the man who quietly registered it with the IEC.

A notice sent to Zuma shows that the matter would be heard on 7 May (Tuesday) at Luthuli House, the ANCā€™s national headquarters in central Johannesburg.

ā€œOn 16th December 2023 you addressed the Umkhonto We Sizwe Party (MKP) in Soweto and you called on all South Africans to join you in dislodging the ANC as the ruling party,ā€ reads part of count 1 of the charge sheet signed off by Uriel Abrahamse, the ANCā€™s chief national presenter.

In another count, the ANC accused Zuma of being guilty of contravening Rule 25.17.13 of the ANC Constitution, which deals with joining or supporting a political organisation or party other than an organisation in alliance with the ANC in a manner contrary to the aims, objectives and policy of the ANC.

ā€œYou appeared on the list for public representatives of the Umkhonto We Sizwe Party (MKP), contrary to the rule because the MKP is not an organisation that is in alliance with the African National Congress (ANC),ā€ reads the charge sheet.

Zuma was advised of the right to be represented by a member of the ANC in good standing and who has been a member in good standing for a minimum period of three months before the date of commencement of the disciplinary hearing.
