JOHANNESBURG - Former President Kgalema Motlanthe is on the campaign trail for the African National Congress (ANC) in Soweto on Friday.

He is there doing door-to-door visits and he will later host a community meeting.

Motlanthe joins Thabo Mbeki as the latest president to campaign for the governing party in the hotly contested province of Gauteng.

ANC national executive committee member, Dakote Legoete, said the upcoming elections represented an important moment for the province and the country.

"Gauteng is one of the most strategic provinces for us as the ANC. It represents the economic hub of the country and the seat of governance in Tshwane. Gauteng is one of the provinces we have placed our energies and part of our strategy is to focus on Gauteng."

With more than 6.5 million registered voters based in Gauteng, the province accounts for the largest bloc (23.55%) of voters in the country.
