Students at Milkwood Learning Academy have let their creativity take the reigns and the business bug bite by turning their own designs into T-shirts that are also helping fundraise for the school.

spar hero of the week

Helderberg, South Africa (30 April 2024) – Milkwood Learning Academy made headlines earlier this year after its founder, Lize Marais, put up a valiant fight to keep the special needs school’s doors open.

A haven for learners who have Autism and Down Syndrome that accommodates all economic backgrounds, Milkwood Learning Academy and Lize have for the past seven years, made sure that children are able to discover their potential in a nurturing and accepting environment. The school is focused on making sure those who have felt rejected by society can find a place where they can set down roots of belonging, and grow in an educational ecosystem that understands their needs.

Thanks to a wealth of community support, Milkwood is still kicking, and the school has come up with creative ways to make sure the accessible education it offers can keep on keeping on!

One way they’re doing this is by tapping into the creative minds they’re nurturing. Learners who are also budding artists have been given the chance to get a taste of being entrepreneurs-in-the-making—all while doing some good for their school.

By letting learners create the Milkwood Limited Edition T-shirt designs, they are actively involved in seeing what they can do with their passions from a business perspective while showing the larger community the kind of difference watering passions from a young age can make—both for the individual students and for the school.

As Lize tells Good Things Guy, each learner gets a portion of the sales made, while the rest of the proceeds go to directly supporting their education.

The school has already sold a whopping 50 T-shirts featuring motorbike artwork by student Raphael which have been a big hit so far (especially among the biking community).
