"We came here to express our heartfelt condolences to the family and ask them to be strong as we provide feedback that the police are following leads and will keep them updated," said Lesufi.

He said they'll provide the police with all the resources they need to crack the case.

"We are shocked, gutted, and disturbed, but we are consoled by the overwhelming support that we continue to receive," Lesufi said.

Mamelodi Sundowns' Daniel Mambush Mudau and Cedric Moela, the club's national supporters' coordinator, said Mashata worked as an announcer for Sundowns and made significant contributions to the squad.

"On behalf of the Motsepe family, the Board of Directors, Technical Team, Players, Management, Staff, Supporters of Mamelodi Sundowns FC and the entire Yellow Nation express their deepest condolences to the family and friends as we mourn the loss of the multi-talented Peter 'Mashata' Mabuse," he said.

TUT spokeswoman Phaphama Tshisikawe said the university is heartbroken to lose one of their devoted employees to a violent crime.

She said Mashata worked as a residence advisor at both the Pretoria and Ga-Rankuwa campuses.

"The university calls upon the public, including the social media users and the media practitioners, to exercise restraint and sensitivity towards the family at this time of grief," she said,

Mashata's mum, Rebecca Mabuse, said that he was his only child and didn't have a child of his own.

"Everyone can tell I'm not coping; I have so many questions; I still can't believe I've lost him; it's so painful," she said.

She said she last saw him at his surprise birthday party two weeks ago.
