Toffees ruin Reds run-in on derby day

By Razeen Gutta

Everton slapped Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp’s farewell tour in the face with a Merseyside derby win at Goodison Park for the first time since 2010.

The Reds lacked both luck and a finishing touch as the hosts put up a tremendous fight to come out 2-0 victors with goals from Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert Lewin.

Liverpool are now just one point clear of Manchester City having played two games more while Arsenal continue to enjoy top spot, four points ahead of Pep Guardiola’s champions.

In the other games on the night Bournemouth beat Wolves 1-0 at Molineux while Crystal Palace picked up a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United.

Jean-Philippe Mateta netted a brace for Palace meaning that in just nine appearances he scored more league goals under Oliver Glasner than he did under Roy Hodgson and Patrick Vieira.

At Old Trafford, Manchester United came back from 2-1 down to beat Sheffield United 4-2 as Harry Maguire and Rasmus Højlund found a place on the scoresheet alongside Bruno Fernandes who scored twice.

On Thursday Manchester City take on Brighton at the Amex before the action continues on Saturday with Liverpool facing West Ham and Aston Villa hosting Chelsea.
